COVERS:

1. Share values with the magazine, will represent the surfing lifestyle as enjoyable and good. Will present values of caring about the environment/outdoors. There will be a heavy focus on fashion, food, travelling, photography, music etc. Self help articles as well as interviews with experts and surfers etc. It will target the TA as it will act as a window into the lifestyle the TA aspire to. I want it to bridge the gap between the lifestyle and the aspirational, young TA, therefore making it more accessible, achievable and real.

4. The audio-visual piece will either be an interview with a surfer discussing the lifestyle or a promotional, short film, compilation highlighting aspects of the lifestyle or it will be an interview and compilation of a board maker/carver. Dependant on who the cover star is.

Main product:

A surfing lifestyle magazine aimed at aspirational, young, mainly male target audience. The product will
cover various values and topics such as fashion, travelling, photography, surfing and living sustainably. The product will act as somewhat of a guide/provide information and entertainment for people who relate/aspire to the lifestyle. The name of the magazine will be "SURGE".

As the magazine will be based predominantly on the surfing "lifestyle" rather than the sport aspect, the product/concept will fit into the lifestyle genre.

By sharing information as well as creating content specific to the surfing "lifestyle" the product will attract the TA, of people between 16-25 who aspire to obtain the lifestyle. By including the lifestyle specific content in the magazine it will make the lifestyle more obtainable by the target audience.

This concept fits into Hearst's key values as it will be a magazine that values different skills, talents and ideas within the surfing "lifestyle" as well as helping others succeed, through its features and information/guides on the lifestyle.

Technical codes such as mise en scene and camerawork will be used to to reinforce the concept, for example, mise en scene such as clothes, surfboards as well as the beach and the sea will be used to solidify the values as well as purpose of the magazine and it's focus on the surfing lifestyle. Camerawork will also be used, long shots of the environment will be used to create familiarity as well as creating a fuller, immersive view of the lifestyle. As well as this mid shots and close shots of subjects will be used to show emotion as well as to highlight values in fashion as well as community and inclusivity.

These mise en scene will create representations of enjoying nature/being outside as well as enjoying surfing and being at the beach.

These representations will attract the target audience as they either relate to the representations or aspire to them.

I want to create a range of representations that include both stereotypes and anti stereotypes around the lifestyle, while the magazine and content will be quite relaxed and informal the messages and values will be quite serious ones supporting sustainability and living enjoyably and fully.

Websites:

The layout of the website will follow the common conventions of other websites in this genre. With the masthead/title at the top and a main video/audio visual article as the main article of the website and smaller articles underneath. The colour palette will be simplistic and the fonts/style will be shared with the cover and contents as a general house style.

My design choices will attract my audience as the website will be simplistic and clean with a heavy highlight on the lifestyle articles and content. This will attract the aspirational audience who are interested in the lifestyle.

I will include pages such as; Videos/Photos, Features, Archive, Shop etc. As well as the home page. Social media will be used as an advertising and marketing tool as well as an extension of the magazine with photos and videos relating to features and upcoming issues as well as behind the scene and article/interview snippets.

The website will share Hearst's values as well as including the publishers name/details on the footer of the website.

The website will feature various photos from past issues and features, this will appeal to the audience who like surf/lifestyle photography as well as people who are interested in various aspects of the lifestyle in photo form. There will also be a shop feature that will incorporate different merchandise as well as links to other shops/companies the magazine supports.

The Brand:

Synergy and branding is important to media industries as it allows cross media and platform content to be consumed while still keeping to a brands values and ideologies as well as style. Recognisable and consistent branding will help a media product/business to build familiarity and a connection with its audience.

I will use similar images from the same photo shoots as well as a consistent colour palette and font/typefaces across both my media products. This will help create a sense of branding and a house style for my brand.

I will include my website address on the magazine with a call to action to check for exclusive content and behind the scenes etc. As well as this I will include my magazine covers on the website on the Archive page.

Social media will be used to create synergy between my products as I will post content relevant to the latest issues as well as links to the magazine and website. This will be attractive to the audience as there will be multiple outputs of the magazine available online and easily accessible.

  1. Love the ideas Olly - i agree that you need to clearly differentiate between the sports and the lifestyle elements.

Statement of intent - well written but you need the specifics and much more on representation and ideology
